Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother M'Lynn, and Shelby's medical battles, the group's underlying friendship is prominent throughout the drama.

The show is loosely based on the story of Memphis disc jockey Dewey{error} Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It played on Broadway from Oct 2009 to Aug 2012, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The{error} show was previously staged in MA & CA during the {error}2003–04 season, as well as WA during the 2008–2009 season.
