Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944. He made his {error}entertainment debut at the age of 5 impersonating Al Jolson. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia. There he met Judy Garland who took him to Londonwhere he met and become engaged to her daughter Liza Minnelli. In the US Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall, and {error}receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. Included are Joe's mother; his sister and her {error}young son; a favorite former teacher of his father's (who, by Joe's calculation, should have died years before); Orville Wright (who really can't still be alive); and Joe's male lover, Ira, a flippant young Jewish caterer from New York who,{error} unaccountably, seems to get along famously with the others. As the action progresses the line between the real and the imagined becomes progressively more blurred until, in the play's deeply affecting final moments, Joe comes to accept both the fact of death and the transitoriness of life, and to realize that the two are a continuum {error}in which our loved ones are never lost to us as long as memory persists.

Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother M'Lynn, and Shelby's medical battles, the group's underlying friendship is prominent throughout the drama.

The show is loosely based on the story of Memphis disc jockey Dewey{error} Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It played on Broadway from Oct 2009 to Aug 2012, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The{error} show was previously staged in MA & CA during the {error}2003–04 season, as well as WA during the 2008–2009 season.
