Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy, Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can’t concentrate on anything… not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson. One afternoon, in a private place in the woods, Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon{error} find within themselves a desire unlike {error}anything they’ve ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another’s arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. The plot covers events over the next three years relating to Shelby's health, and with how the women cope with their conflicts, while remaining friends: Shelby's decision to have a child despite jeopardizing her health, Clairee's friendship with the curmudgeon Ouiser; Annelle's transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in{error} town to a good-time girl then repentant revival-tent Christian; and Truvy's relationships with the men in her {error}family. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother M'Lynn, and Shelby's medical battles, the group's underlying friendship is prominent throughout the drama.

The show is loosely based on the story of Memphis disc jockey Dewey{error} Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It played on Broadway from Oct 2009 to Aug 2012, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The{error} show was previously staged in MA & CA during the {error}2003–04 season, as well as WA during the 2008–2009 season.
