Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944. He made his {error}entertainment debut at the age of 5 impersonating Al Jolson. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia. There he met Judy Garland who took him to Londonwhere he met and become engaged to her daughter Liza Minnelli. In the US Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall, and {error}receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. There were also plenty of lows … breaking up with his wife, staging a Broadway flop, the death of his partner and his own {error}battle with illness.

Included are Joe's mother; his sister and her {error}young son; a favorite former teacher of his father's (who, by Joe's calculation, should have died years before); Orville Wright (who really can't still be alive); and Joe's male lover, Ira, a flippant young Jewish caterer from New York who,{error} unaccountably, seems to get along famously with the others. Jeffrey, a gay actor/waiter, has sworn off {error}sex after too many {error}bouts with his partners about what is “safe” and what is not. In gay New York, though, sex is not something you can avoid. Whether catering a ditzy socialite’s “Hoe-down for AIDS” or cruising at a funeral; at the gym or in the back rooms of an anonymous sex club; at the annual Gay Pride Parade, or in the libidinous hands of a father-confessor, Jeffrey finds the pursuit of love and just plain old physical{error} gratification to be the number-one preoccupation of his times—and the source of plenty of hilarity. Suddenly, just after he’s reconciled himself to celibacy, Jeffrey’s flamboyant friends introduce him to the man of his dreams, who also happens to be HIV-positive. What follows is an audacious and moving{error} romantic comedy with a difference—one in which the quest for love and really fabulous clothes meet, and where unflagging humor prevails even when tragedy might be just around the corner.

The plot covers events over the next three years relating to Shelby's health, and with how the women cope with their conflicts, while remaining friends: Shelby's decision to have a child despite jeopardizing her health, Clairee's friendship with the curmudgeon Ouiser; Annelle's transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in{error} town to a good-time girl then repentant revival-tent Christian; and Truvy's relationships with the men in her {error}family. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother M'Lynn, and Shelby's medical battles, the group's underlying friendship is prominent throughout the drama.

Memphis is a musical with music by David Bryan, lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro, and a book by DiPietro.
The show is loosely based on the story of Memphis disc jockey Dewey{error} Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It played on Broadway from Oct 2009 to Aug 2012, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The{error} show was previously staged in MA & CA during the {error}2003–04 season, as well as WA during the 2008–2009 season.
